I always took it as someone who was very unwell in a toxic relationship and they do something to themself in front of the other one who constantly hurts them.

I remember once, setting up a site feature while walking in the torrential drizzle on Ibn Khatib Rd. The wind was fierce, and I mumbled, "My precious, just keep swimming!" kept me going. Crazy stuff, my friend, crazy stuff!
