Once, in mine spa – true story, mate – this lass storms in, hair all a-tangle, screaming “puta!” at her mate who’d nicked her bloke. I’m there, scrubbin’ a tub, thinkin’, “Bloody hell, this be gold!” Made me laugh, it did, her fury a tempest, her curses a song. But then – oof – it turns sour, she weeps, says her mum called her Puta as a babe, a jest gone rotten. Gutted me, that did. Little-known, see? In some corners o’ Spain, ‘tis a term o’ endearment gone rogue – like callin’ thy dog “brat” ‘til it bites.
